FREE NALOXONE ( NARCAN ) FOR OPIATE OVERDOSE

Opiate overdoses can be fatal. If you use opiates - a class of drugs that includes heroin, synthetic opiates such as fentanyl, and pain relievers available by prescription, such as oxycodone, oxycotin, hydracodone, codein, and morphine - you need to carry Naloxone ( Narcan ) on you in case of overdose, and/or make sure that family, close friends and care givers do.

For detailed information about the use of opiates, and what to do in case of overdose, contact Kerri Barton, the harm reduction services coordinator at Portland Public Health at 541-6952, or email Kerri at kbarton@portlandmaine.gov.

WHAT IS NALOXONE ( NARCAN ) ?

Naloxone ( Narcan ) is is a medication designed to reverse opiate overdose. It can very quickly restore normal breathing to a person whose breathing has stopped or slowed because of use of opiates. Naloxone is not a substitute for medical care.

If someone has experienced a drug overdose they, or someone else, should call 911 even if naloxone has been administered.

Nasal Spray naloxone, commonly referred to by its brand name, Narcan, is intended for use by first responders, family members, close friends, and others responding to an overdose emergency.

Intramuscular naloxone comes in a 1ml single-dose vial and is injected with a syringe in the person's thigh, shoulder or buttock. The injection can be given through pants, and anyone, the drug user, family, friends, and care givers can be trained to carry and administer this type of naloxone.

HOW TO OBTAIN NALOXONE ( NARCAN )

Pharmacies: You do not need a prescription to obtain naloxone from a pharmacy, and Maine Care and most insurances cover the costs.

POETRY

A poem by Mona Miller

Definition

Insanity has been my friend

Doing the same thing

And again history repeats itself

Without change life getting shorter

With every moment lost in the

Momentum of past habits stuck

On repeat caged like rats and

Barking like dogs only I'm barking

Up the wrong tree what's wrong

With me? Why can't I see my

Behavior? Effects everybody, my kids,

My family. My addiction gets

The best of me. My anger, my

Rage take hold of the reigns

Take control so emotional

Numb inside. Doped demise. Can't disguise

What I can't hide anymore

Tired of this life and its revolving door

A revolver can you hear me cause now I'm

Knocking on Heavens door, please answer

Because I can't take this life, my strife

I need you like never before

I'M ONLY HUMAN

A poem about homelessness by

Dean Thebard

New York City, 2020

...

The world in which I live

I don't want to share

Where nobody knows who you are

Or seldom to care

We all have our problems

Like what we're going to eat

Yet my food I cannot purchase

Nor the socks that left my feet

Invisible to the world

Life just rushes by

Yet when the world is safe at home

I'm homeless and I cry

My cup lies so empty

All I long for is a meal

Yet the their faces buried in their phones

Don't know how I feel.

The doorway is my pillow

Whilst you're sleeping in your bed

Nightmares I see daily

Whilst pleasant dreams abound in your head.

So please don't ignore me

I won't shout nor offend

For I am just the invisible man

Looking for a friend.

We hope you find Figaro's Resource Guide to be helpful. If you're aware of any resources we've missed, please send us an email. Figaro's can also be accessed at:

FIGAROSportland.org

This resource guide will be updated and published seasonally, four times a year, and volunteer help with compiling resources, production and distribution is much needed and appreciated. Our intention is to steadily increase the number of copies printed and distributed, as finances allow. If you'd like to help with that, please consider purchasing and donating paper and toner cartridges, since we don't have a non-profit status as yet and prefer not to receive monetary donations. Please send us an email to inquire about volunteering and to ask about the type of paper and cartridges we need.

The resource information in Figaro's was compiled by Cliff Gallant, gallant.cliff555@yahoo.com. A special thank you to Reggie Osborn, reggieo@fastmail.us., for his help with design and layout.

And thanks also to the many people who were so forthcoming with information and do so much to make the resources listed in this guide possible.
